The picture sync software you link to has a nice comparison of the various video/pict sharing services.Flickr is an online photo/image storage site
Almost all of my videos are short clips taken with my digital cameras and are best enjoyed in the context of the surrounding pictures.

Right now I'm using gmails "security through obscurity" unlisted galleries but a plus for me on smug mug is the password protected unlisted galeries.Ģ. The site looks really slick and the videos hosted look fantastic.ġ. Trikster2, for video, you really should check out. View image here: - Anyway, it works with Flickr, SmugMug, and just about everything else. There's a great little uploader application I love. I've been happy, but they have been really slow on uploads for a while, now, and I'm excited about some of the new stuff that SmugMug is doing, so I'm going to research them as a possible supplement/replacement for Flickr.

They're a small, responsive company, and I can't recommend them highly enough. I've been using them for my videos ( and ) for years, and I'm super happy. It's free, no size limits on videos, accepts any format, provides RSS feeds, automatically creates you a nice little FLV for embedding, can sideload to the Internet Archive, etc. I can't even view the vids to see if they are better than google until I can get on a system with quicktime. Quicktime is not required for video on picasa web albums. It looks like the video requires quick time. I still have issues before plunking down my $59.99:

Looking at smug-mug if I upgrade to the $59.99 plan I can get H.264 video clips that are up to 2 minutes long and it appears someone has hacked a slick looking picasa uploader: It's been a year or years though and right now it's looking pretty slick especially compared to flicker. I've looked at and discounted smug-mug before but it never grabbed me. There are some options but they are no-names that do not inspire much confidence. So far I had yet to find a flickr equivalent that does video. One device, one processing app, one web service, my life is simple bliss. One of the best decisions I made was not to get a video recorder. And I like the fact that my video and pictures are all handled by one application and one web album service. OTOH picasa's integration with the picasa web albums is great. Google's development of picasa/picasaweb is surprisingly (to me) slow. google does not have an unlimited storage option, they only offer 1gb for free, and their storage fees are relatively expensive (40gb is $75 for one year)ģ. My beautiful vids are scrunched to something awful looking.Ģ. I've have several issues that have me considering a move:ġ. Right now I'm using picasa with picasaweb to organize/publish my pictures/vids for friends/family It's slow, and I need something that does video. Too much time involved in setting it up, and limited bandwidth from my DSL.īased on this thread I'm now looking at smug mug again.įor me flickr is not an option. If my house burns down, I lose everything forever. Hosting my own website from home is out for two reasons: For that kind of sharing, I would have rather done something online. I put the ~350 JPEGs on a DVD for them, and it was 900MB. While the 10-20% I do want to share is a small percentage of the total, we're still talking about hundreds of megabytes.įor example, I just took some pictures of a the first birthday party of a friend's kid. So far, my Lightroom library has something like 4000 photos in it. The reason I'm looking for something online is that I do want to share a significant number of photos, but I also want to use it as an off-site backup option for my own work. You could also host your own website from home, that would be pretty easy, unlimited storage, easy to upload to. Just curious, if 90% of your photos are for you eyes only, why put them online at all? That would cut down on your space requirements big time.
